"We are proud of the results that reflect Frelimo's work" - Verónica Macamo

“Nos orgulhamos dos resultados que reflectem o trabalho da Frelimo” – Verónica Macamo

The head of the Frelimo party, Verónica Macamo, said today in Maputo city that the centralized results of the October 9 general elections reflect the work done by the party and its presidential candidate.

The National Electoral Commission (CNE) announced the results of the general elections today, giving the lead to the Frelimo party and its candidate, Daniel Chapo. The Podemos party won second place in parliament. Venâncio Mondlane was the second most voted presidential candidate. Renamo and Ossufo Momade followed in third place. The Democratic Movement of Mozambique and Lutero Simango took fourth place.

"The results fundamentally reflect the vote of each voter. Yes, we are proud. If we want to be truthful, you've seen here that we've been everywhere explaining what we did and didn't do. We've also explained the constraints we've been under [during governance]. It's not easy. This country has come a long way," he said.

He considered that, because there had been several cases in which the minutes and tabulation notices had not been registered, the country was on the way to improving electoral processes.

He also said that there had been no strategy on the part of the Frelimo party to demote Renamo from the status of the second party with a parliamentary majority.

"I don't want to talk about others. But I think this is the result of the work that our candidate and the leaders and members of Frelimo have done in terms of not only talking about what has been done, but also what we are going to do," he said.

On the other hand, he called on Mozambicans to refrain from demonstrations "which, fundamentally, can be said to be peaceful" to demand the election results.

"We need to remember that. Young people own this country today and tomorrow," he said.
