Seventeen people arrested in Sofala province

Dezassete pessoas detidas na província de Sofala

On Monday (21) in Sofala, the Republic of Mozambique Police (PRM) arrested 17 people involved in protests against electoral fraud and the murder of Elvino Dias and Paulo Guambe.

Among those arrested were three minors, whom the PRM has released, said spokesman Dércio Chacate. The other 14 individuals are in prison.

They were caught trying to disrupt public order by putting up barricades on the roads, including burning tires, in the early hours of the day.

"All the roads that had these barricades have been intervened and removed to ensure the normal flow and free movement of people," he said.

According to the spokesman for the PRM Provincial Command in Sofala, most of the detainees live in the Munhava, Massamba and 15th districts.

On Tuesday, the government urged parents not to let their children get involved in strikes and protests.
