Several bodies of civilians were found floating, tied together, off the coast of the town of Mocímboa da Praia, Cabo Delgado, in the second attack by insurgents.
According to a VOAThe bodies were discovered last Thursday (05) and are suspected to be those of fishermen captured and killed by insurgents.
"The bodies were seen on the beach. We don't know for sure how they got there," said one resident, pointing out that insecurity has returned after a violent act by the insurgent group.
Another resident, quoted in the same publication, explained that the residents "woke up to this information of bodies floating around", and many are panicking and preparing to leave the municipal town, which is protected by the Rwandan force. "The situation is not good. Other people are carrying briefcases to flee."
The Center for Public Integrity (CIP), which also reports the discovery of bodies, adds that the armed group captured a woman and her three children the day before, on Wednesday (o4), but later released them.
"The situation in Mocímboa da Praia tends to get worse," reads a CIP publication.
On Saturday, August 31, the insurgent group raided Mocímboa da Praia for the first time, three years after capturing and occupying the airport town for several weeks, ambushing a Rwandan force patrol.
The exchange of fire between the insurgents and the force resulted in the death of two civilians, including a teenage girl, who was shot while trying to escape the clash.
Sérgio Cipriano, administrator of Mocímboa da Praia, who confirmed the ambush, described the current situation in the village as calm, but called on residents to be vigilant in order to stop strangers from circulating.
