A few days ago, MISA Mozambique, an NGO that defends press freedom in Mozambique, expressed its concern and rejection of the death threats against Rui Minja, a journalist and correspondent for TV Sucesso in Cabo Delgado.
In a statement sent to the media, MISA says that at the beginning of this month the journalist has been receiving threatening calls and messages from unknown individuals.
The threats include intimidating visits to the reporter's home in the city of Pemba by allegedly armed men, according to the MISA document.
The document also states that the reporter had been receiving threatening calls in the middle of the night from an unknown number.
At first, the journalist didn't answer the calls, but at his insistence, he ended up doing so. On the other end of the line, someone said they were outside the reporter's home.
Looking outside, Rui Minja saw a car parked in front of the gate of his house.
Frightened, he hung up the call and sent messages asking for help to his fellow journalists, while at the same time contacting the police, who immediately went to the scene.
However, when the PRM arrived at the reporter's house, the individuals had already left. However, according to the reporter, the threats continued on subsequent days.
MISA is calling on the authorities to take measures to ensure the journalist's safety.
It also urges the authorities to investigate in order to discover the perpetrators of these threats and to ensure that they are duly penalized.
