Uganda: Opposition leader shot by police during protests

Uganda: Líder da oposição baleado pela polícia durante protestos

Ugandan opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, better known as Bobi Wine, was shot by local police during protests near the capital Kampala. Clashes broke out between demonstrators and police during the protests.

The Platform for National Unity declared that the security forces had "attacked Wine's life" and announced that Wine - who, as well as being a singer, is a politician - had been shot in the leg and seriously wounded in Bulindo, in the Wakiso district.

NUP spokesman Joel Ssenyonyi said that X-ray examinations showed that "there were some fragments of a tear gas canister embedded in Bobi Wine's leg".

The politician is due to undergo surgery today to remove the fragments.

The Ugandan police said that Wine had been advised not to take part in the parade after attending a private event in Bulindo, but that he "insisted on going ahead and closing the road, which led to police intervention".

Police officers present at the scene claim that Wine tripped while getting into the vehicle, causing the injuries, while Kyagulanyi and his team initially claimed that he had been shot.

Wine, 42, a former comedian before being elected to the National Assembly in 2017, ran for president of Uganda in 2021, but lost to the current president, Yoweri Museveni, in elections that he considered to have been rigged.
