Monkeypox has "arrived" in a neighboring country

Varíola do Macaco “já chegou” a um país vizinho

The new variant of monkeypox (Monkeypox/mpox) is worrying health authorities around the world. So far, there have been around 18,000 cases and more than 520 deaths. The greatest concentration of the disease is in central African countries, especially the Democratic Republic of Congo. There are also reports of cases on other continents.

Health authorities fear that the number of cases will rise even further, given the lack of diagnosis in the countries most affected at the moment. But they also fear that more people are infected but take a long time to show symptoms.

The disease continues to spread, and this Tuesday Malawi, which borders Mozambique, announced the first suspected case of monkeypox.

The Blantyre District Health Department has confirmed that there is a patient at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital suspected of having contracted mpoxwrites a local portal.

Initially, the symptoms pointed to other diseases, but later became more consistent with cases of monkeypox.

Blantyre's Director of Health and Social Services, Dr. Gift Kawalazira, emphasized that the case is still under investigation, saying that it is too early to confirm whether it is really mpox. Complex examinations are needed to confirm or not the case.

It is suspected that the patient had contact with two individuals in the city of Chikwawa, who also had similar symptoms.
