This morning in Maputo, the National Electoral Commission (CNE) announced that 260 million meticais had been made available for the electoral campaigns of the 37 political groups contesting the elections on October 9.
The largest amount of money will go to the three parties with parliamentary seats, namely Frelimo, Renamo and the MDM. Each party will receive just over 40 million meticais.
The candidate supported by the Democratic Alliance Coalition (CAD), Venâncio Mondlane, will receive 21.5 million meticais. In fact, each of the candidates for President of the Republic will receive the same amount, totaling 86 million meticais.
The remaining parties will receive amounts ranging from one to 10 million meticais.
The CNE will deliver the sums in phases, in three tranches. The disbursement of the second tranche (25%) is conditional on justification of the use of the first (50%), and the third (25%) on the use of the second.
Expenditure on advertising material, travel and subsistence costs in the context of the campaign, as well as the bank management of the accounts into which the money will be channelled, are considered valid expenses for the use of the money.
The election campaign kicks off on August 24, according to the electoral calendar.
