More than 150 people were reported missing last year in Mozambique

Mais de 150 pessoas foram dadas como desaparecidas no ano passado em Moçambique

A total of 159 people went missing last year in Mozambique, according to figures released in a report by the Support Fund for Missing Persons, which considers the situation to be worrying.

Speaking this week in Maputo at the presentation of the results, the president of the Fund, Apolinário Munguambe, revealed that of the 159 people who went missing in 2023, 87 were male, which represents 55%, while the remaining 72 people registered in our database, give a disappearance ratio of 3 people per week over the past year.

"Of these people, 146 were found and as of December 31, 2023, 13 people were still 'missing'," he said, quoted by the RFI.

The report also stresses that of all the people found, four were lifeless, "two children, one aged 2 and the other 10, and two young women, aged 20 and 31, who were also found lifeless".

Meanwhile, the report also points to violence, neglect and displacement of populations and child labor as factors behind this phenomenon.
