Bar Association supports judges' strike for violated rights

Ordem dos Advogados apoia greve de juízes pelos direitos violados

The Mozambican Bar Association (OAM) stands in solidarity with the Mozambican Association of Judges (AMJ) in continuing the strike announced to begin on August 9.

"We are deeply in solidarity with the judges in this struggle to regain their violated rights, and we will do everything we can to ensure that society does not suffer as a result of this strike announcement," says the OAM.

According to Mozambican lawyers, the judges' demands are legitimate, not least because the Constitution of the Republic of Mozambique or the Statute of Judicial Magistrates prohibits judges from going on strike as officials of sovereign bodies.

On the other hand, he says that it would be apathetic to disregard the impact of the implementation of the Single Salary Table (TSU) on the lives of judges, who have seen important allowances taken away from them.

In a note, the OAM recalls that with the implementation of the TSU, judges are no longer entitled to the technical allowance of 60% of the basic salary and the exclusivity allowance of 50% of the basic salary.

"This demand by the Judicial Magistrates is not futile... in addition to demanding new rights, they are demanding what has been unjustly and illegally taken away from them," it reads.

The lawyers say they are ready to mediate talks between the government and the judges, so that together they can find solutions to "the visible but solvable problems".
