The Angolan justice system has ordered the release and closure of the case against former drug trafficker Gelson Emanuel Quintas "Man Genas", due to lack of evidence. Man Genas is being held in Luanda following his extradition from Mozambique after denouncing the alleged involvement of the Angolan police authorities in drug trafficking.
The defense of Gelson Emanuel Quintas, known as "Man Genas", has confirmed that the Attorney General's Office has ordered the criminal case to be closed because there is no evidence to hold his constituent criminally responsible.
The former drug trafficker is accused of the crimes of outraging the state, abuse of trust and criminal association, after having denounced a year ago the alleged involvement of senior figures in the national police and the Criminal Investigation Service in drug trafficking.
The defense lawyer, Francisco Muteka, says that his client - who has been detained for five months in Luanda, since he was "expelled" from Mozambique - could go free at any moment, praising the role of the Public Prosecutor's Office in this decision.
"It's important to note that the Public Prosecutor's Office has done the right thing with this dismissal order, because the Public Prosecutor's Office not only has the power to prosecute, it also has the power and responsibility to refrain from prosecuting whenever there is no evidence or material that could bring the accused before the court."he confirmed.
The lawyer points out that, after the case has been closed, all that remains is for Man Genas to be released immediately, arguing that this is a measure that depends on the court and not the Public Prosecutor's Office.
"Since we have a defendant in prison, who has already been proven to have no criminal charges against him, his release should be issued immediately. However, it is the court and not the Public Prosecutor's Office that has the power to issue the release in this particular case. So let's wait for the opportune date and for it to be issued and for Man Genas to be released and return to his family"he exhorted. (Text: RFI. Image: DR)
