The Bank of Mozambique (BM) introduced a new series of Metical banknotes on the 16th of this month. The 2024 series comes with visual and security changes.
According to the WB, the new series will circulate at the same time as the notes and coins introduced on July 1, 2006.
The first announcement of the introduction of the new series dates back to May 17th and, a month later, there are those who haven't prepared for the "new reality".
The reality shows that the new series is not being easily accepted, with traders even refusing transactions. O MZNews found that this stems from the poor dissemination of information by the Central Bank up until the date of the introduction of the 2024 series. But there are also claims of similarities with foreign currencies such as the South African Rand and the European Euro.
The Governor of the BM, Rogério Zandamela, seems to be aware of the "imbroglio" and, this Sunday (16), in the village of Mueda, Cabo Delgado province, on the occasion of the celebrations for the Day of the Metical, the Mueda Massacre and the African Child, he asked the population for calm.
He stressed that the notes and coins of the new metical series are more secure than the old ones and have components that make it easier for visually impaired people to identify them.
