Cabo Delgado: WFP accuses lack of funds to support victims of terrorism

The global economic climate is affecting the ability of the World Food Program (WFP) to continue supporting the victims of terrorism in Cabo Delgado province.

"We are at a time of financial difficulties. Resources are limited due to many other disasters or world wars that have taken these resources out of Mozambique," said the Deputy Country Director of the WFP in Mozambique.

Assistance to the population affected by the armed conflicts is limited in some districts of Cabo Delgado. "We are trying to get assistance to the most vulnerable communities".

In February of this year, the WFP revealed that it only had funds for humanitarian assistance until the end of April. At the time, it needed 78 million dollars for the next six months. To provide support for the whole year, the calculation was around 142 million dollars.

Mauricio Burtet says, however, that the country continues to work with its partners to pay special attention to the victims of terrorism in the province.

"The WFP has been working together with its partners to be able to maintain attention in Cabo Delgado because it is necessary to continue to assist for some time. The government, the WFP and other UN partners are working together to minimize the suffering," he said.

In these efforts to find more support, the message is that efforts must be made to re-establish peace in Cabo Delgado and other parts of the world.

"The increase in conflicts creates a lot of suffering and need for millions of people around the world. We need to take this message of peace to every corner where we operate and for our partners to carry this message forward," he said.
