Demobilized from "Peace 1992" riot at UN headquarters in Maputo

Desmobilizados de “Paz de 1992” amotinam-se na sede da ONU em Maputo

A group of demobilized members of the State Defense and Security Forces have been rioting for three days at the United Nations headquarters in Maputo. They are former soldiers who "laid down their arms" to make way for the signing of the General Peace Accords on October 4, 1992, in Rome, Italy. But the group also includes former combatants from the colonial war.

Speaking to MZNewsOn Thursday, the group's representative said that this was due to the failure of the state and the UN to keep their promises.

"Since then we've been left to our own devices. We're claiming that we were promised financial compensation at the time. Since then, no water has come or gone," said the coordinator, Adolfo Samuel Beira.

He said that the group's concentration at the UN headquarters in Maputo was due to the fact that their demands were not being met by state institutions.

"The only form of dialog with the government has been through documents that are never answered, including requests for hearings," he said.

However, he said that these latest demands have been accepted by the UN, which has promised to forward them to the government.

"We're here waiting for the answers. This is where we'll wait," he said.

The UN did not respond to a request for comment.
