Communication prices: ARC seeks reasons for tariff increases

Preços de comunicação: ARC procura razões dos agravamentos das tarifas

The Competition Regulatory Authority (ARC) is working with mobile phone operators to ascertain the reasons for the increase in communication tariff prices in the country.

Recently, the Chairman of the ARC Board of Directors, Iacumba Ali, said that the ongoing work aims to determine the causes more precisely.

"We are listening to the mobile phone operators. We've already heard from two of them, and I believe we'll conclude this phase of the process within a few days," he said, and guaranteed that measures would be taken if there were any irregularities.

In ARC's view, the Mozambican National Communications Institute must present technically and legally justified explanations for the increase in communication fees.

ARC has already requested the average prices practiced in the southern region of the African continent and other parts of the world to support the position to be taken once the process is over.

The ARC regulation prohibits groups of companies and their associates from imposing limits on the freedoms of companies to act or from promoting their concertation, through their statutes, internal regulations, codes of conduct, decisions that have the purpose or effect of preventing, distorting or appreciably restricting competition in all or part of the market, writes the News.

The ARC also prevents the adoption of uniform or concerted commercial conduct, directly or indirectly fixing purchase and sale prices or interfering in their determination.
