The lack of payment for overtime work, rounds and other activities outside normal working hours could lead resident (post-graduate) doctors at Maputo Central Hospital (HCM) to paralyze their activities.
The doctors, an unknown number of whom have not been paid for over a year's worth of overtime. The class complains of physical, emotional and financial strain, and the matter has already been referred to the HCM management, which is accused of non-compliance.
The stoppage, which covers, among other tasks, emergency shifts, inpatient rounds and emergency surgery, could begin on May 1st. The suspension should only take place when the demands have been met.
"Resident doctors at the HCM do not receive fees for emergencies, rounds and work done on holidays and weekends. The situation has created travel costs to carry out these activities and affected the quality of life of residents and their dependents," reads the publication of the "The country" which quotes a letter from the resident doctors to the hospital management.
