Government meets today to assess the situation of the shipwreck on Mozambique Island

The government is meeting this Tuesday to assess the situation of the shipwreck that occurred this Sunday on Ilha de Moçambique, in Nampula province, and to take the necessary measures to minimize the impact of the incident.

The Head of State sent a government delegation, led by the Minister of Transport and Communications, Mateus Magala, to provide aid to the survivors and send them on their way, as well as to investigate the reasons behind the tragedy, according to a statement from the Presidency.

The document also states that, after learning of the tragedy, the Head of State instructed provincial authorities at various levels to mobilize rescue teams and analyze the situation.

Quoted by Radio Mozambique, the Minister of Transport and Communications said that the shipwreck on Sunday weakens the Mozambican family and leads the government to reflect deeply on the control of maritime transportation.

Mateus Magala made these remarks on Monday, on the island of Mozambique, at the opening of the meeting of the Emergency Operational Committee, COE, which was attended by members of the local and provincial government.

The head of the Transport and Communications portfolio stressed the need to take a stand in order to avoid similar cases in the future.
