Boane: Shipwreck in the Umbeluzi River results in one death

Boane: Naufrágio de uma embarcação no rio Umbeluzi resulta em um óbito

A boat with 11 people on board sank on Saturday (30) in the Umbeluzi river, in the district of Boane, resulting in the death of one person. It was operated by the National Civil Protection Unit.

According to the mayor of Boane, Jubia Bonifácio, the boat sank when it was connecting the two banks of the Umbeluzi River, in Boane, Maputo province, taking into account that the Mazambanine Bridge is submerged due to the rising flow of the river.

"We still don't know if the death was caused by the shipwreck, but in the early hours of Saturday, when we were unstacking the boat, the sailors noticed the body of a man aged between 50 and 60, with no identification, lying underneath the boat. The strangest thing is that there were life jackets, but the body of the deceased wasn't wearing one," said the source, quoted by Letter from Mozambique.

However, the source added that shipwrecks are a recurring occurrence, stressing the need to build a bridge. "We are asking the government to build the bridge to stop people suffering here in Mazmbanine," he concluded.
