The Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) and the Mozambican Tax Authority (AT) intercepted a 20-foot container of ivory tips packed in sacks at around 11 a.m. yesterday, March 21, in a quantity of 651 at the port of Maputo and bound for Dubai.
According to Mozambique BioIn an attempt to deceive the authorities, the prohibited species were arranged in the central part of the interior of the container and around bags of corn.
At the moment, according to the same publication, steps are being taken to identify the exporter and customs broker of this product. However, lawyer David Ucama said that SERNIC must notify the National Administration of Conservation Areas (ANAC) in order to carry out an examination of these seized products.
"SERNIC is going to notify ANAC so that it can carry out an expert examination and be the trustee, as has usually been the case," said David Ucama, a lawyer in the field of biodiversity conservation.
For his part, SERNIC's spokesman, Leonardo Simbine, assured that the Tax Authority would soon make a statement on the matter.
