Deputy Minister casts new uncertainties over FMA's continued management of LAM

Vice-Ministro lança novas incertezas sobre a continuidade da FMA na gestão da LAM

The Deputy Minister of Transport and Communications, Amilton Alisso, said on Wednesday in Maputo that the continuity of Fly Modern Ark (FAM) in the restructuring process of Mozambique Airlines (LAM) is still a matter to be analyzed.

The contract between the government and South Africa's FMA expires next April and yet there seems to be no sign of the company's fate.

"All possibilities are on the table," he said.

These statements also cast doubt on the recent position of the Minister of Transport and Communications, Mateus Magala, in favor of the continued management of the FMA.

The deputy minister was also asked whether the fact that the interim chairman of LAM's board of directors was the managing director and owner of FMA meant that he was anticipating a contract renewal. In his reply, he said it was necessary to 'separate the waters' and deconstruct the coincidence.

"There is no management contract now. Someone has been appointed to take on the position of PCA. So the FMA continues. It just so happens that one of the FMA managers is now the interim PCA. That's all that's happened. Everything else remains the same," he said.

Despite the progress made with the FMA's intervention in LAM, the deputy minister said that the desirable levels of efficiency for the national flag carrier had not yet been achieved, even with the financial work underway.

"Despite the good results we are achieving as a result of the reforms underway at LAM, we recognize that the company has not yet reached the desired levels of efficiency," he said.
