Nampula's new mayor launches massive garbage removal campaign

Novo edil de Nampula lança campanha de remoção massiva de lixo

The mayor of Nampula, Luís Giquira, recently sworn in for a five-year term, launched a massive garbage removal campaign in the municipality this Saturday morning at the "Waresta" wholesale market.

Since October last year, market users have been complaining about the poor hygiene conditions in the market, due to a clear lack of cleanliness. For the mayor, the action is in fulfillment of his election manifesto.

"As we promised during the campaign that the cleanliness and brightness of our city was imperative, today we launched this massive campaign to remove garbage in the city of Nampula. I've mobilized the staff, there's no Saturday, Sunday or public holiday, we're going to work from Monday to Monday until we minimize the garbage problem in this market. We're worried about the hygiene conditions in this market and we're going to work hard until we eradicate the garbage," said the mayor.

Quoted by AIM, Giquira said that the action had the support of businesspeople and other friends of the environment who had provided some equipment for the operation to take place.

"We're also recovering some of the municipality's own broken-down cars. Regarding the strategy for waste collection in the city, we're talking to dedicated companies and we'll decide later," he explained.

The mayor of Nampula has guaranteed that by next Wednesday he will appoint and announce his team.

With a population of approximately 800,000 inhabitants, the city of Nampula produces an average of 80 tons of garbage a day, between the urban and suburban areas.
