The Attorney General of Mozambique today called for support in the fight against drug trafficking, given the "webs" that this type of crime already has in the country's public institutions, from the police to politics.
Speaking in Maputo at the opening ceremony of the 2024 judicial year, Beatriz Buchili emphasized the need to continue to strengthen the integrity of institutions and mechanisms to combat corruption, "as this is one of the instruments used by organized crime to carry out its actions".
"That's why drug trafficking has the capacity to spread its webs in public institutions, including within the police, the judiciary, the legal profession, political actors and the economic and social spheres, manipulating the agendas of institutions and compromising the state," she said, quoted by DW.
According to Buchili, another crucial aspect of preventing and combating drug trafficking, he explained, is international cooperation, since we can't think of a purely national solution. For this reason, "we must make use of the various international cooperation mechanisms, which we have been doing, making use not only of formal mechanisms but also informal ones, with a focus on the various international forums in which our institutions are represented".
"As the Public Prosecutor's Office, we are committed to strengthening our work in the direction of preparatory investigation and prosecution of organized and transnational crime, which includes international drug trafficking, terrorism, kidnapping, money laundering, among others, making our country free of this scourge, guaranteeing the harmonious growth of our children, young people and adolescents," he added.
The solemn opening session of the 2024 judicial year, under the slogan "Strengthening the Role of the Judiciary in Combating Drug Trafficking", took place today in Maputo, in the presence of the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi.
