The e-commerce company eBay is going to lay off around a thousand workers, approximately 9% of its full-time employees, and reduce the number of outsourced workers.
According to a report published today by Bloomberg, the company justifies the move by saying that the number of employees and expenses have outstripped business growth, at a time when the economy is slowing down.
"The company needs to be more agile in the face of a challenging economic environment," eBay, which is headquartered in San Jose, California, said in a statement released on Tuesday, noting that although we are making progress on our strategy, headcount and expenses have outpaced the growth of our business.
In addition, eBay says it is "implementing organizational changes" that "align and consolidate" certain teams, in order to "improve the experience" and "better meet" the needs of customers around the world.
This is the second time eBay has laid off workers in a year.
eBay joins more than 60 other tech companies, including Amazon and Alphabet, which controls Google, which have laid off almost 11,000 workers, according to Layoffs.fyi, which tracks layoffs in the tech industry.
