Public Prosecutor's Office accuses magistrates and police for freeing foreign drug trafficker

Ten citizens, including magistrates and police officers, are accused by the Zambezia Public Prosecutor's Office of criminal association, failure to promote criminal proceedings and abuse of office, for having freed a Tanzanian drug trafficker in 2021.

The case was opened in 2021, with a public prosecutor, a judicial magistrate and eight officers from the Criminal Investigation Service and the Protection Police as defendants.

The foreign national was allegedly arrested in June 2021 on suspicion of drug trafficking from the northern zone to Maputo. "He supplied them in the military zone".

The defendants in question allegedly concealed the existence of the drugs in the residence of the detained citizen, and did not take any steps to ascertain the material truth.

"They hastily arranged for his release, which was annulled by the investigating judge, on the grounds that there was no evidence that he had committed crimes related to drug trafficking or other illegal activities," writes the court. RTP, quoting a statement from the Public Prosecutor's Office.
