Sixty-one inmates at the Savane Open Penitentiary Center in the city of Beira benefited last Saturday from the pardon granted by the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi.
Through Presidential Decree No. 11/2023, of December 22, Nyusi granted freedom to 897 prisoners across the country, as part of the celebration of Family Day.
Of the 61 prisoners released in Sofala, 15 are from the penitentiary establishments in the city of Beira and the rest from the districts.
The ceremony to execute the presidential pardon was led by Cecília Chamutota, Secretary of State for Sofala Province, who called on the amnesty recipients to behave in a peaceful and respectful manner.
The leader warned the prison population to behave in an exemplary manner during her term of office and went on to say that the presidential pardon is motivated by the firm conviction of man's capacity for regeneration, rehabilitation and social reintegration.
The ceremony was witnessed by the Chief Prosecutor of the Republic, the Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Beira, the Director of the Provincial Justice and Labor Service, the Judge of the Execution of Sentences Section, the Provincial Commander of the PRM, among other guests.
