The Joint Electoral Observation Platform, Sala da Paz, will monitor the repeat municipal elections to be held this Sunday (10.12) in the municipality of Marromeu and in some municipalities of Gurué, Nacala Porto and Milange.
To this end, a team of duly accredited election observers has already been set up and will be responsible for collecting information on the ground. Another team will be based in Maputo City, from where it will systematize the data collected and share it with electoral actors and the general public.
The platform recognizes that the sixth local elections "registered a worrying number of irregularities that put to the test the credibility of public institutions with increased responsibilities in organizing elections and building the Mozambican democratic system".
For this reason, he believes it is necessary for all actors with direct or indirect involvement in the electoral process to adopt an orderly and peaceful stance in obedience to the electoral legislation and other laws in the country.
"The repeat vote in these municipalities is an opportunity for electoral management bodies at all levels to use the lessons learned from the October 11 process and improve their performance in making the electoral process more credible," the Peace Room said in a statement
The platform is concerned about the fire at Murrupelane Comprehensive Primary School, one of the venues that will host the repeat election in the Nacala municipality. For Sala da Paz, the police must investigate and clarify the case quickly. Furthermore, it calls on all the voters involved in this rerun to turn out en masse to exercise their right to vote.
The platform ends its statement by reaffirming its commitment to continue collaborating with all interested parties and to accompany the electoral process, in order to strengthen the transparency and credibility of all the phases linked to the repetition of elections in these places, from voting to the validation and proclamation of the results by the Constitutional Council.
