Deaths in Chiúre: PRM says Samora Machel Júnior's accusations are "unfounded"

Mortes em Chiúre: PRM diz que acusações de Samora Machel Júnior são “infundadas”

The Republic of Mozambique Police (PRM) denies that four people were killed by police officers in Chiúre, Cabo Delgado, as accused by Samora Machel Júnior, a member of the Central Committee of the Frelimo party and son of Mozambique's first President.

In a letter published on Thursday, the politician, Samora Machel Júnior, expressed "total disagreement" and "disdain" at the "unpatriotic acts" involving the party in the local elections on October 11, pointing out that in Chiúre, "because of electoral disputes", four citizens "were killed by bullets fired by the PRM".

Considering "Samito Jr's" accusations to be "unfounded", the PRM says that it will legally demand proof, as it admits that a young man was accidentally killed by agents.

According to the newspaper "O País", the words of the son of Mozambique's first president did not go down well with the PRM, which explained that "not only does it deny the accusations that it is responsible for the deaths of four people in Chiúre, in Cabo Delgado province, but it will also take legal action against this member of Frelimo, the ruling party.

"The PRM regrets, denies and vehemently condemns the post circulating on social networks and later broadcast by some media outlets, stating that the police had fatally shot four individuals in the district of Chiúre, in Cabo Delgado province," said Orlando Mudumane, spokesman for the General Command.

Meanwhile, the corporation says that it "recognizes and deeply regrets the death of a 19-year-old individual on October 12, accidentally shot when the Police of the Republic of Mozambique had to act to put an end to a serious riot led by members and sympathizers of political parties".

"The police will legally demand proof of Samora Machel Júnior's accusations, which were circulated in a letter written by the son of Mozambique's first president," said the spokesman.

Accusations of Samora Machel Júnior aside, the police are talking about incidents during the demonstration marches over the preliminary election results.

In his letter, Samito Jr, as a member of the Frelimo party, "in its highest leadership", and assuming "a feeling of deep identification with the ideas and history of the party", expressed "total disagreement and disdain for the anti-patriotic, profoundly anti-democratic acts that, although they are carried out in the supposed defense of the interests of the Frelimo party, in the creak and creep of the truth, discredit the Frelimo brand before the people that we have sworn to fight for, liberate and defend".

"These are acts that corrode the democratic process, jeopardize national unity and compromise the peace that is desired for the Mozambican people, regardless of party choices," he added.

The politician also acknowledged that it was "regrettable that, at crucial moments" such as the elections, "personal and group interests take precedence over the collective goal, calling into question the name of the Frelimo party and the nation".
