A teacher was caught collecting voters' cards to count votes in favor of the Frelimo party. As a result, according to the Public Integrity Center's Election Bulletin, at the end of Wednesday (06.09) there was unrest at the District Police Command in the town of Homoíne, in Inhambane.
In order to achieve her aims, or those of the party, of collecting 35 names, the citizen promised to give some monetary value or food products to the voters after the elections. She had already collected 25 names.
According to the head of the MDM list in Homoíne, the teacher was writing down the names in her lesson planner.
During her work, as the Renamo list-maker in Homoíne told the press, the teacher knocked on the wrong door to advertise. It was the house of the Renamo delegate in Homoíne.
Having learned of this, the Renamo and MDM parties reported the incident to the police authorities.
Speaking to journalists, the Renamo candidate in Homoíne said that this was not the first electoral crime in the area. In other cases, they had reported it to the National Electoral Commission and the Technical Secretariat for Electoral Administration, "but they did nothing. So this time we decided to bring in the police."
Asked about the modus operandi of the teacher he told, saying first that he has proof of the crime: "Yes, I have proof. When she arrives at a person's house, she looks to see if they have registered and at which post. Then she collects the person's name and tells them to go to the polling station on the 11th, before voting, to indicate where they should vote."
In the cities of Maputo and Matola there are also reports that the heads of blocks have multiplied their efforts to collect voter card numbers in their blocks.
In fact, MZNews has learned that a citizen in the Napipine neighborhood, in the Namicopo district of Nampula, was caught in the same situation collecting voter registration cards for the Frelimo party. He told the local press that he was collecting the documents to rectify mistakes.
