The damage caused by the rains at the beginning of the year to the cane fields and equipment of the Maragra sugar company has already led to losses estimated at 3.6 billion dollars.
In the agricultural fields alone, losses amounted to 470,000 tons, around 1.6 billion meticais.
These losses had damaged the company's productivity, which led to the possibility of stopping work in April and reducing the workforce, according to the General Manager, Filipe Raposo.
Work continued, but the sugar mill lost most of its workforce, which fell from 500 to 140.
Due to the magnitude of the damage, the company is not yet planning the next production campaign, according to Notícias.
Every year the company, located in Manhiça, produces around 80,000 tons of sugar, resulting from 460,000 tons.
