In 2022, Mozambique produced just over 20,000 tons of beef, representing a growth of 13% compared to the previous year.
According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MADER), the country produced a total of 20,051 tons last year, compared to 17,781 in 2021, with Maputo province being considered the largest cattle breeder, with 9,358 tons, corresponding to almost half of the meat consumed in the country (47%), followed by Nampula and Maputo city, which contributed 10% each.
According to Revista Terra, the country produced 3,725 tons of meat from small ruminants, 3,166 from goats and 559 from sheep.
Sofala, Nampula and Tete were the provinces that supplied the most goat meat, while Cabo Delgado and Nampula provided the most sheep.
In terms of chicken, Maputo province produced close to 100 tons last year, accounting for 68% of national production. Nampula was second, with 16,000 tons (11%) and Manica, with 12,000 tons, gave the country 9% of the total.
