Road accidents: 387 people lost their lives in the first half of this year

Mozambique recorded a total of 387 deaths in road accidents in the first half of this year, a reduction of 11% compared to the 434 deaths recorded in the same period of 2022, according to a statement from the transport ministry.

The report by the Ministry of Transport and Communications, quoted by Lusa, states that the deaths resulted from a total of 357 road accidents recorded in the same period, which also caused 295 serious injuries and 412 minor injuries,

"Speeding, mechanical deficiencies, poor pedestrian crossing, disrespect for priority, illegal overtaking and drink-driving are the main causes of accidents on the roads," the ministry's report points out.

The ministry document also says that the provinces of Nampula, Zambézia and Cabo Delgado have the potential for an increase in cases due to the rapid expansion of motorcycles and motorcyclists.

Nevertheless, according to the same report, the rate of road accidents and their consequences decreased in 2023 compared to last year, a factor that results from the mitigation measures implemented by the authorities.

Among these measures are "speed and alcohol checks, checks on the technical condition of vehicles, awareness campaigns for cyclists and motorcyclists to wear helmets and lectures on road safety".
