Mozambique to sign rail border removal agreements with four countries

Moçambique vai assinar acordos para remoção de fronteiras ferroviárias com quatro países

Mozambique is going to sign agreements to remove railway borders with four countries, namely Malawi, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Botswana, so that locomotives can run in these countries without having to change them, including the crew.

The signing of these agreements is part of the implementation of measure 11 of the Economic Acceleration Package (PAE), which aims to increase the flow of people and goods to and from Mozambique.

The information was recently provided by the Minister of Transport and Communications, Mateus Magala, at the 18th Annual Private Sector Conference, which took place in Maputo.

The measure also aims to reduce transit times for goods and make Mozambican ports more competitive.

Mozambique already has a rail border elimination agreement with South Africa and e-Suatini.

Under the agreement with South Africa, trains operated by the Mozambican rail company CFM and its South African counterpart Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) will cross the border at Ressano Garcia without restrictions and without the need to change locomotives.

With e-Suatini, the railway border for the transportation of goods along the Goba line, which connects the two countries, has been removed. Direct trains already run to and from the port of Maputo, operated by CFM and e-Suatini Railways.
