The elderly woman who was declared dead in Babahoyo, Ecuador, and who 'woke up' during the wake by banging on the coffin, has died.
The information was confirmed to the Associated Press (AP) by the woman's son. Gilberto Barbera Montoya told the news agency that doctors told him that his mother died on Friday night in June, seven days after the strange case happened - and after being admitted to intensive care.
It all happened on June 9, when Bella Montoya was pronounced dead after a cardio-respiratory arrest, which allegedly followed a stroke. The Ministry of Health maintains that the woman did not respond to resuscitation maneuvers, which led to her death being declared. The woman was veiled that same day, and began to move and show signs of life when she was already in the coffin.
According to what the son told the press, his mother hit "the coffin with her left hand" and was then helped out by two men, and The images were shared on social networks.
At the time, the woman was admitted to another hospital, and the son mentioned that he was trying to figure out what had happened.
Now, Gilberto Barbera Montoya has explained to AP that one of his mother's sisters has made a formal complaint, so that the doctor who issued the death certificate can be identified. The son also warned that the situation "wasn't going to stay like this", guaranteeing that he still has no explanation as to what happened.
Ecuador's Health Minister said that the woman was under "permanent surveillance", but gave no information about the case - except last week, when he guaranteed that a committee would investigate the way death certificates are issued at the hospital in question.
The wake is now being held at the same funeral home where the woman showed signs of life last week.
