Manica health authorities declare a cholera-free province

Autoridades sanitárias de Manica declaram província livre da cólera

On Monday, the health authorities declared Manica free of cholera, which affected six districts in the province for four months.

Cholera broke out at the end of January in the district of Tambara, in the north of the province, and spread to five other districts.

According to the authorities, in recent weeks all the centers that had been opened to treat diarrheal diseases, including cholera, have been shut down.

These centers were operating in the districts of Tambara, Manica, Vanduzi, Gondola, Machaze and Cidade de Chimoio.

According to AIM, between January and April of this year, Manica province cumulatively reported 1,600 cases of cholera, resulting in a total of nine deaths.

The city of Chimoio, the provincial capital, registered the most deaths, with six, followed by the districts of Tambara (02) and Manica (01).

The chief provincial doctor of Manica, Flávio Roque, recently confirmed in Chimoio that, in the last two months, the province has not registered any patients suffering from severe diarrhea or cases of cholera.

"We can now declare that the province is cholera-free. It's been two months since we received people with problems associated with diarrhea that we can suspect is cholera. When this is the case, the measure to take is to close the centers," said Flávio Roque.

However, the source warned the population to continue observing all hygiene and safety measures to prevent further outbreaks.

"We don't have cholera today, but that doesn't mean we won't have it tomorrow. If we don't observe basic individual and collective hygiene measures, cholera could recur in our province," warned Manica's provincial chief medical officer.
