Dutch national soccer team player accused of trafficking more than 1T of cocaine

Jogador da selecção holandesa de futebol acusado de traficar mais de 1T de cocaína

Dutch international footballer Quincy Promes, of Spartak Moscow, was charged by the Dutch Public Prosecutor's Office on Tuesday (30) with trafficking 1,300 kilos of cocaine in two shipments in Belgium in January 2020.

The shipments in question were intercepted at the port of Antwerp in Belgium and involve the Spartak player, a 50-time international for the Netherlands, who is suspected of drug trafficking and criminal association.

The preliminary hearing in the case is scheduled for Monday, in the second case involving the 31-year-old striker, after the Public Prosecutor's Office reopened a criminal investigation for allegedly stabbing a relative in the knee in July 2020.

The murder theory has been ruled out due to a lack of evidence as to the motives for the assault, which Promes denies, although police wiretaps have revealed that he confessed to the crime.

The player was arrested in 2020 and Ajax, where he was playing at the time, sold him to Spartak Moscow for 8.5 million euros, close to half the amount they paid for him to Sevilla in 2018.

This year, Promes enjoyed one of the best years of his career, scoring 25 goals in 36 games for the Muscovites, who he previously represented between 2014 and 2018. (sapo)
