Parliament discusses today a bill to reduce the salaries of senior managers

The Assembly of the Republic (AR) will today discuss the proposed law to revise downwards the salaries of senior managers and members of the Provincial Assemblies, as part of the implementation of the Single Salary Table (TSU), "in search of wage justice".

The document drawn up by the Council of Ministers proposes the amendment of Law no. 5/2022 of February 14, which defines the rules and criteria for setting the remuneration of public servants, holders or members of public bodies and holders and members of the bodies of the administration of justice and approves the Single Salary Table, amended and republished by Law no. 14/2022 of October 10.

When approved, the review should cover ministers, deputy ministers, secretaries of state, members of parliament, members of provincial assemblies, among others.

Speaking last week after a session of the Executive, the Minister of Economy and Finance, Max Tonela, explained that the measure aims to reduce wage disparities between the top and the bottom, as well as reducing the weight of salary expenditure in the Gross Domestic Product.

The Council of Ministers' proposal follows a recent recommendation by the International Monetary Fund to adopt the measure and ensure greater fiscal sustainability in the country. "Ensuring that the public wage bill is reduced is fundamental to safeguarding fiscal and macro sustainability."
