Maputo hosts 1st International Arbitration Conference

The city of Maputo is hosting the first International Arbitration Conference on Tuesday, May 30, with the aim of training and informing interested parties about the benefits, vicissitudes and specific elements of commercial arbitration, as well as contributing to boosting and improving the quality and efficiency of commercial arbitration in Mozambique.

According to a note from the organization, the event is part of the objectives of the Commercial Arbitration Centre of the Portuguese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CAC), which aims to boost the development of the Mozambican arbitration market.

"Accordingly, the event will address important topics on the Mozambican arbitration reality, presented by nationally and internationally renowned speakers/experts from Portuguese-speaking countries, namely Mozambique, Portugal and Angola," reads the organization's note.

It is important to note that commercial arbitration is one of the most widely used means of conflict resolution in the world, to settle commercial disputes quickly, expertly, efficiently and confidentially.

However, according to the note, in Mozambique, despite the increasingly pressing need for more developed and better known commercial arbitration, its effective use can still be considered incipient.

It is for this reason that holding the first International Arbitration Conference, involving all stakeholders in the discussion of issues relevant to the Mozambican reality, is undoubtedly important for boosting arbitration in Mozambique.

It should be noted that, prior to this conference, CAC CIM promoted, in partnership with the Sofala Provincial Council of the Mozambican Bar Association, a three-month online course on introduction to arbitration, which was attended by 100 students.
