Drug Sellers Sentenced to 16 and 19 Years in Larger Jails

Vendedores de droga condenados a 16 e 19 anos de prisão maior

The sixth section of the Nampula Provincial Court sentenced two citizens to maximum sentences of 16 and 19 years in prison and a fine of more than three million meticais for selling hard drugs, including methamphetamine.

These are individuals discovered by the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) on November 19, 2021, when it seized 18 bowls of the drug hidden in the closet of a house in the Muhaivire neighborhood.

At the time, the accused said that the substances came from Maputo and did not belong to them. The residence and the vehicle used in the drug trade reverted to the state, via the Office for Combating Drugs, according to Notícias.

The sentence began to run from the date of their arrest, and they will be able to serve half of their sentence if they show good behavior and the rest on probation.

The defendants' lawyer said that they will appeal against the sentences because there was no material to justify them.
