It's official: "Covid-19 pandemic is over," - WHO

The World Health Organization (WHO) announced today that the Covid-19 pandemic has officially ended. Nevertheless, the director-general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, warned that the virus continues to pose a threat to public health globally.

In a press conference, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that at Thursday's meeting, the Emergency Committee advised that this classification, which had been in force since March 11, 2020, be changed "to a lower alarm level", thus dictating the end of the global health emergency.

"Yesterday, the Emergency Committee met for the 15th time and recommended that I declare an end to the international public health emergency. I accepted the advice. It is therefore with great hope that I declare the end of Covid-19 as a global health emergency," said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

However, the WHO director-general stressed that this change in classification does not mean that Covid-19 no longer poses a threat to public health at a global level.
