Tribute to musician Azagaia: UN envoy calls for investigation into police repression

Homenagem ao músico Azagaia: Enviado da ONU pede investigação à repressão policial

The United Nations Secretary-General's envoy to Mozambique, Mirko Manzoni, says that the police must take responsibility if their violent conduct in the face of the demonstrations is proven, but called for the investigations to be concluded.

"It's clear that we have two different positions. On the one hand, the opposition is saying that there is police violence. The police say they were responding to a danger. I think the President spoke very clearly. He said: We're going to investigate. Now we have to see what the result of the investigation is," said Manzoni, in an interview with Lusa in New York.

"I don't think the Mozambican President [Filipe Nyusi] has any interest in denying the truth. And if the truth is that the police made a mistake, the police have to take responsibility. But before speaking, the institutions should always be allowed to do the work that needs to be done," he appealed.

Last week, the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA Mozambique) asked for explanations about the police repression, considering the justifications given by the police to be equally serious.

Last week, Filipe Nyusi announced investigations into this police action and into the identity of those who wanted to achieve "their intentions" with the tribute to the rapper Azagaia, regretting the disturbances that took place.
