Mozambican authorities prevent Angolan MPs from visiting "Man Gena"

Autoridades moçambicanas impedem deputados angolanos de visitar “Man Gena”

Three MPs from Angola's main political party, the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), were prevented from visiting their compatriot Gerson Quintas, "Man Gena", last Wednesday (22), in the custody of the National Migration Service (SENAMI) in Mozambique.

According to the newspaper The CountryMan Gena is living illegally in Mozambique, where he has come to seek asylum because he is allegedly being persecuted in Angola.

The MPs say that they submitted the request for a visit and clarification of the situation to SENAMI. The latter sent them to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which in turn sent them to the Ministry of the Interior, which then sent them to SENAMI.

"There are three institutions that don't take any responsibility in this case, which leads us to conclude that either Mr. Man Gena is debilitated, and we can't see him in this state, or I don't know what's going on," said UNITA's parliamentary vice-president, Olívio Nkilumbu.

Nkilumbu told Voice of America is very concerned about the health of Man Gena's wife, who is about to give birth and who, "according to videos we have seen, was raped in Angola while her husband was shot three times.

The MP guarantees that his party will continue to follow this case and do what it can for "humanitarian reasons".
