Around 719,240 people aged one year and over will be vaccinated against cholera from Monday to Friday in the provinces with cases of the disease, as part of the efforts of the health authorities and partners.
The information was given yesterday in Maputo City during a joint press conference between the Ministry of Health (MISAU) and the World Polio Eradication Initiative to give an update on polio and cholera in Mozambique.
The vaccine will be administered specifically in the districts of Lago, Lichinga, Mandimba, Mecanhelas and Sanga, in Niassa province; Milange, in Zambézia; Caia, in Sofala; and Xai-Xai, in Gaza.
Updated figures provided by the Minister of Health himself indicate that at least 37 people have lost their lives since the outbreak of cholera in September last year, out of 5,260 reported cases.
Armando Tiago was also quoted by Notícias as saying that, in parallel with the immunization of the population, diarrhea surveillance is underway in all districts for the early detection of outbreaks and the implementation of control measures.
And in view of the approach of Tropical Freddy, which has already hit the province of Inhambane, specifically in the district of Vilanculo, the governor said that the MISAU is ready in terms of human resources and medicines for the clinical and diagnostic approach to cases of water-borne diseases.
