Authorities have seized 26 tons of shrimp that have been banned from being caught since November, due to the closed season in force, in Zambézia province, in the center of the country, an official source quoted by Lusa said.
The fish was seized on Monday in the district of Nicoadala, in a truck from Sofala, and was destined for Nampula province, said Agnélio Bissane, from the fisheries department in Zambézia, speaking to the local press.
"If we convert this large volume of fish into money, we see that we end up losing a lot because we caught a product below the commercial price," said Agnélio Bissane, noting that the crime costs the state more than a million meticais.
It should be noted that catching shrimp is prohibited from November until March, to allow the species to reproduce.
In addition to the shrimp, the truck, which was abandoned by the owners, was carrying six tons of dried fish, a product for which the truck's owners had a license to transport.
It is known that since the beginning of the closed season, six vehicles have been seized in possession of various types of fish, according to the provincial authorities.
