The President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, on Wednesday sent his condolences to Pope Francis on the death of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, highlighting the "humility that always characterized him".

"His resignation, for health reasons, was a true testament to the humility that has always characterized him," said Filipe Nyusi, quoted in a note from the Presidency of the Republic, sent to the media and cited by Lusa.

The Mozambican head of state also addressed "heartfelt condolences" to the "Catholic Church, to Christians all over the world and to the bereaved family", noting that "during his pilgrimage" Benedict XVI proved to be "a true Christian" who cultivated in the faithful the virtues of peace and reconciliation.

"We stand by you at this difficult time and pray that the teachings left by Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI will be passed on to future generations," said Filipe Nyusi.

Benedict XVI's funeral will take place on Thursday in St. Peter's Square at the Vatican at 09:30 local time, with Pope Francis presiding.

Benedict XVI died on Saturday at the former Mater Ecclesiae monastery in the Vatican, where he had resided since 2013, after resigning from the papacy.
