The organizers of the soccer World Cup in Qatar, which was won by Argentina, announced today that "80% of the waste generated in the stadiums was recycled".

"This is a great achievement thanks to the detailed planning and unwavering commitment of the tournament organizers and national stakeholders," the organizing committee's sustainability officer, Bodour al Meer, said in a statement quoted by Lusa.

One of the main objectives of the sustainability strategy for this World Cup, which ended on December 18, was to "reduce waste and increase recycling, especially of plastic".

To achieve this, the tournament organizers "successfully replaced plastic with compostable and reusable alternatives," the note notes.

One of the concerns of the 2022 World Cup was the sustainability of its venues and the Education City Stadium, known as The Diamond of the Desert, became the first in Qatar to be certified with five stars.
