The President of the Republic (PR), Filipe Nyusi, said that the Mozambican state remains stable and optimistic in the face of the major internal and external challenges to which it has never given in.
"The achievements of 2022 can be summed up in simple words: a year of work, political stability, pacification, credibility, sustainable governance and projection beyond borders. Therefore, it can be categorically stated that the general situation of the nation is one of stabilization and renewed optimism in the face of internal and external challenges," said the PR, while presenting the general situation of Mozambique today at the Assembly of the Republic in Maputo city.
For Nyusi, the report presented to the nation illustrates the difficulties that have been imposed on Mozambique and other nations worldwide, but also proves the government's efforts to overcome the barriers.
"Contingencies have hit all nations, but we have been able to turn the page and live lighter and brighter days," said the PR.
The spokesperson for the parliamentary caucus of the Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (Frelimo), Feliz Sílvia, said that the presidential report exceeded the expectations of party members, as it addressed issues of socio-economic development, terrorism and the fight against corruption.
"Our assessment was more than positive. It was very structuring information. It provided an X-ray of economic and social development, but also the issue of terrorism. We're on the right track. People are already resuming their lives in the abandoned areas. We think that the report was up to the challenges that the country faced," said the representative of the MPs from the party with a parliamentary majority.
The parliamentary caucus of the Mozambican National Resistance party (Renamo) believes that Filipe Nyusi missed the opportunity to explain to Mozambicans the contours surrounding the creation of new municipalities and the holding of elections for 2023 and 2024.
"We cannot call for the Constitution of Mozambique to be violated by holding district elections. The constitutional command states that it should not be a commission or a group of citizens who decide whether or not we can hold general elections, because this is a usufruct of what is in the Constitution of Mozambique," said Arnaldo Chalaua, spokesman for the largest opposition party.
For Fernando Bismarque, spokesman for the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM) party with a parliamentary minority, the Head of State's report disappointed the expectations of Mozambicans and failed to provide solutions to the country's concerns.
"His statements fell short of people's expectations. It's true that he acknowledged the road accidents, but he didn't put forward any possible solutions. Another aspect relates to the economic acceleration package, which is not having a real impact on the lives of Mozambicans, on small and medium-sized businesses," said Bismarque, stressing that the report lacked action to combat corruption more effectively. "It's not enough to recognize that there is corruption.
