The leader of Renamo, Mozambique's main opposition party, Ossufo Momade, and his counterpart from the Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM), Lutero Simango, met on Wednesday in Maputo to discuss the situation in the country.

Asked about a possible coalition between Renamo and the MDM, Ossufo Momade referred to the possibility at a later date.

Finding ways to remove Frelimo, the party in power since national independence in 1975, is the main objective of Renamo, the largest opposition political force in the country. This was expressed by the president of the partridge party, Ossufo Momade, who held a closed-door meeting in Maputo with Lutero Simango, leader of the opposition Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM).

"Everyone knows that we are on the verge of the local elections and we need to find a way to satisfy Mozambicans with regard to the Mozambican liberation project," the Renamo leader told RFI. Ossufo Momade added that "Mozambicans are having a hard time. How can we get out of this? The opposition needs to work to push back those who are running this country".

Ossufo Momade spoke of the future, but Lutero Simango has no doubts that a possible coalition could create changes in the country's governance. "The solution for Mozambique is in our hands. We, through this meeting we had, are going to move forward. We're not talking about a coalition, it's still premature to talk about that, but we need to find a way to free Mozambicans," concluded the Renamo leader.

The president of the Democratic Movement of Mozambique has said that his party is open to a coalition with Renamo and other political formations for the local elections in 2023 and the general elections in 2024.

The meeting between the presidents of MDM, Lutero Simango, and Ossufo Momade, of Renamo, took place at the MDM headquarters in Maputo.
