Isabel dos Santos denies having been the target of "political pressure"

Isabel dos Santos nega ter sido alvo de “pressões políticas”

Angolan businesswoman Isabel dos Santos said that the book by the former governor of the Bank of Portugal Carlos Costa "tells an untruth".

"The Portuguese state has never intervened in my favor or exerted any kind of pressure in relation to my investments," said the daughter of former Angolan president José Eduardo dos Santos, in an interview with the German media outlet Deutsche Well, quoted by Lusa.

"My investments have always been private and have nothing to do with political interventions by the Portuguese state," he said.

According to the businesswoman, the book by the former governor of the Bank of Portugal Carlos Costa is "untrue".

"This book by the governor of the Bank of Portugal is untrue," said Isabel dos Santos, adding that she had met Carlos Costa "a couple of times".

"The issues dealt with had to do with the bank's management and investments and there was no question of political or other pressure," he said.

Recently, Carlos Costa, in his book "The Governor", accused the Prime Minister of political meddling with the banking supervisor in the case of Isabel dos Santos, arguing that he confirms this in the written message he sent him.

"This week, on the same day that he announced a lawsuit, the Prime Minister sent me a written message in which he acknowledged that he had contacted me to convey the inappropriateness of removing Isabel dos Santos. In other words, the Prime Minister himself confirmed the attempt by political power to interfere with the Bank of Portugal," said Mário Centeno's predecessor.

The book "O Governador" is the result of a series of interviews by Observador journalist Luís Rosa with Carlos Costa, who led the Bank of Portugal between 2010 and 2020, and has caused controversy.

Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa has already said that he will sue the former governor of the Bank of Portugal for insulting his honor, after Mário Centeno's predecessor reported in his book that he was pressured by the head of government not to remove Isabel dos Santos from EuroBIC.
