France "breaks" Schengen Agreement due to terrorist threat

France intends to "abandon" the Schengen Agreement and reintroduce border controls due to terrorist alerts, the international press reported Monday.

According to some European press, the decision by the French authorities on the agreement regulating free transit between the countries of the European Union comes into force on November 1 and will last until May 2023 and targets all borders - land, sea and air.

The decision comes as a consequence of the war in Ukraine, which has set off alarm bells in Emmanuel Macron's government about the presence of illegal citizens in the Schengen Area, especially from the Balkans, coupled with the fact that French territory is being used by migrants to enter the UK.

It should be noted that the Schengen Agreement is a convention between European countries on a policy of open borders and free movement of people between signatory countries. It was signed on June 14, 1985.
