The inauguration ceremony of João Lourenço, reelected President of the Republic of Angola, after the Constitutional Court validated this Thursday the electoral results that give victory to MPLA, will take place on September 15, announced the Presidency.
The investiture ceremony of the President of the Republic, João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, and the vice-president of the Republic, Esperança Maria Eduardo Francisco da Costa, will take place in Luanda, at Praça da República, according to a note posted on the Angolan presidency's Facebook page.
The Constitutional Court today dismissed the appeal filed by the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), the largest Angolan opposition party, stressing that the evidence presented "does not allow to question the overall results" of the elections announced by the National Electoral Commission (CNE).
According to the presiding judge, Laurinda Cardoso, the phase of the electoral litigation has been concluded and the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, the vice-president, Esperança da Costa, and the elected deputies to the National Assembly should be invested in their functions.
Last week, the president of the CNE, Manuel Pereira da Silva, released the final tabulation of the August 24 general elections, which proclaimed the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) and its candidate, João Lourenço, as the winner with 51,17% of the votes, followed by UNITA, with 43,95%.
With these results, the MPLA elected 124 deputies and UNITA 90 deputies, almost double the 2017 elections.
The PRS party and the newcomer Humanist Party of Angola (PHA) elected two deputies each.
CASA-CE, the National Patriotic Alliance (APN) and the P-Njango did not obtain seats in the National Assembly, which in the 2022-2027 legislature will have 220 deputies.
