Renamo sees "dissonance" in government's response to terrorism

Renamo vê “dissonâncias” na resposta do Governo ao terrorismo

Renamo, the main opposition party in Mozambique, says there are disagreements within the government regarding the insurgency in Cabo Delgado, which translates into a lack of consistent results in combating it.

This comment comes after a week ago President Filipe Nyusi and Defense Minister Cristóvão Chume made somewhat contradictory statements about jihadism.

Filipe Nyusi denounced the existence of owners of gas stations in Sofala province, in the center of the country, who use the business for money laundering and financing terrorism in Cabo Delgado.

Renamo spokesman José Manteigas says that in recent days we have been bombarded by very controversial and contradictory information coming from the same government.

José Manteigas says that "the Minister of Defense has come out and said that the causes, the sources of funding, and the faces of the terrorists are not yet known, but, curiously, the President of the Republic has said that fuel pumps can be a source of funding for terrorists.

For that party official quoted by VOA, "President Filipe Nyusi, being the highest magistrate of the nation, cannot appear with lamentations as a common citizen, he must bring consistent information and even with solutions.

José Manteigas says there are many weaknesses within the Defense and Security Forces, particularly at the level of the State Information and Security Services, stressing that since 2017, "we are not seeing any action to prevent terrorism in Mozambique."

The Renamo spokesman adds that his party is perplexed when the Head of State "makes this general approach to a problem as acute as terrorism, because it was expected that he, as commander-in-chief of the defense and security forces, would instruct them to bring concrete results.

"There are dissonances in the government and we are concerned about that," concludes the Renamo spokesman.
